Waiting times

... vary depending on the time of year, the hall of residence and the type of accommodation. Students who do not wish to live in a shared apartment but would prefer an apartment of their own or would like a family apartment should submit an application to the Studentenwerk accommodation office early. The application is non-binding.

The allocation regulations ...

... are designed to ensure fair allocation of places in the halls of residence.
Special reservations are made for foreign students who come to Darmstadt as part of an exchange programme, if they are within the university quota. Further information on this can be obtained from the universities' international offices.
Half of the halls of residence places are normally reserved for students coming from abroad.

Rooms in group units with no waiting times

In the Studentenwerk-housing areas"Karlshof" (Adress: Alfred-Messel-Weg 6 - 10 D) and "Nieder-Ramstädter-Straße" there normaly are no official waiting times because of privately organised room let ("Selbstbelegung")
"Privately organised room let" means that the current occupants make their own decision regarding a new tenant and carry joint responsibility for the decision. Students looking for this type of accommodation must make some effort themselves (check the notices posted around the halls of residence and on the "Mensa"-refectory notice boards, get in touch with and talk to the people in the apartment shares). In our Accommodation Office they can get a list with free rooms in group units.

Studentenwerk halls of residence or privat rooms?

In most cases it cheaper to live in a student hall of residence. It is recommended to submit an application for a place in a hall of residence as early as possible to the Studentenwerk Accommodation Office (Wohnraumverwaltung). The application is non-binding for students.
The accommodation blocks have varying levels of facilities and the types of rooms offered also differ. With the exception of a handful of apartments for married couples and families, there are mostly only single rooms located in group units, two-person apartments, single apartments or corridor groups. The latter have washbasins in the room but the bathrooms and kitchens are designed for communal use. Flats and apartments contain a kitchenette, shower and toilet. The choice of accommodation type is based how much rent you can afford and whether you would prefer to live alone, in a corridor group or in an apartment share.

Tenancy agreement

Before you can sign a tenancy agreement you need:
  • € 200.00 for the deposit (€ 250 for family apartments and exchange students)
  • a valid ID card or passport
  • proof of enrolment (or Studienkolleg ID)
  • your bank account details
The proof of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) can be submitted later.

Length of tenancy

The maximum length of tenancy is set in all Studentenwerk halls of residence at seven semesters for all new tenancy agreements. Exceptions are made in cases of hardship.

Types of accommodation

From simple to luxurious: most students live in single rooms in communal apartments, 2-person apartments, single apartments or corridor groups. The latter contain wash basins but the toilets, showers and kitchen are shared. Flats and apartments contain a kitchenette, shower and toilet. Communal facilities in halls of residence include: washing machines and driers, party and hobby rooms. Garages and parking spaces for cars, motorcycles and cycles can be rented at low cost. A few special family apartments are available for students with children. The Studentenwerk has fitted special doors and toilet/shower facilities for wheelchair-bound students in rooms in the Karlshof hall of residence which can be accessed by wheelchair.

Rooms with Internet access

The connection of hall of residence rooms to the university computer centre is progressing rapidly. A large number of our tenants already have Internet access. Further information on this can be found in the "Studentenwerk halls of residence" section. The accommodation office can provide you with detailed answers to specific questions.
