Waiting times

... vary depending on the time of year, the hall of residence and the type of accommodation. Students who do not wish to live in a shared apartment but would prefer an apartment of their own or would like a family apartment should submit an application to the Studentenwerk accommodation office early. The application is non-binding.

Rooms in group units with no waiting times

In the Studentenwerk-housing areas"Karlshof" (Adress: Alfred-Messel-Weg 6 - 10 D) and "Nieder-Ramstädter-Straße" there normaly are no official waiting times because of privately organised room let ("Selbstbelegung")
"Privately organised room let" means that the current occupants make their own decision regarding a new tenant and carry joint responsibility for the decision. Students looking for this type of accommodation must make some effort themselves (check the notices posted around the halls of residence and on the "Mensa"-refectory notice boards, get in touch with and talk to the people in the apartment shares).

Studentenwerk halls of residence or privat rooms?

In most cases it is cheaper to live in a student hall of residence. It is recommended to submit an application for a place in a hall of residence as early as possible to the Studentenwerk Accommodation Office (Wohnraumverwaltung). The application is non-binding for students.
The accommodation blocks have varying levels of facilities and the types of rooms offered also differ. With the exception of a handful of apartments for married couples and families, there are mostly only single rooms located in group units, two-person apartments, single apartments (mostly with long waiting times) or corridor groups. The latter have washbasins in the room but the bathrooms and kitchens are designed for communal use. Flats and apartments contain a kitchenette, shower and toilet. The choice of accommodation type is based how much rent you can afford, how long you can accept waiting times and whether you would prefer to live alone, in a corridor group or in an apartment share.

Tenancy agreement

Before you can sign a tenancy agreement you need:
  • € 200,00 € up to 250,00 € for the deposit
  • a valid ID card or passport
  • proof of enrolment (or Studienkolleg ID)
  • your bank account details
The proof of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) can be submitted later.

Types of accommodation

From simple to luxurious: most students live in single rooms in communal apartments, 2-person apartments, single apartments or corridor groups. The latter contain wash basins but the toilets, showers and kitchen are shared. Flats and apartments contain a kitchenette, shower and toilet. Communal facilities in halls of residence include: washing machines and driers, party and hobby rooms. Garages and parking spaces for cars, motorcycles and cycles can be rented at low cost. A few special family apartments are available for students with children.

Rooms with Internet access

The connection of hall of residence rooms to the university computer centre is progressing rapidly. Further information on this can be found in the "Studentenwerk halls of residence" section. The accommodation office can provide you with detailed answers to specific questions.
